UCMed Pulmonary Unit Officially Opens
The University of Cebu Medical Center (UCMed) has opened its Pulmonary Unit equipped with machines and services which can provide the safest care to patients with chronic respiratory disease.
UCMed launched its new unit on October 27, 2021, just in time for the celebration of Respiratory Care Week.
Opening the Pulmonary Unit has been significant, especially now that the country is dealing with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a respiratory illness.
The Pulmonary Unit provides services both for diagnostic procedures and therapeutic procedures which include the following:
Diagnostic Procedures
● Pulmonary Function Testing
● Sputum Induction
● Arterial Blood Gas Extraction
● Tracheal Aspirate Culture and Sensitivity Collection
● Carbon Dioxide Monitoring
● Pulse Oximetry Monitoring
Therapeutic Procedures
● Aerosol Therapy
● Chest Physiotherapy
● Invasive Ventilation
● Non-invasive Ventilation (CPAP/Bi-PAP)
● High Flow/ Oxygen Therapy
● Incentive Spirometry
The unit will also soon conduct a bronchoscopy procedure at its unit. Bronchoscopy procedures used to be performed at the operating room.

UCMed Chairman Atty. Augusto Go, in his speech during the launching and blessing of the unit, said its opening is very timely, although it has been a long overdue.
Atty. Go hoped more units like the Pulmonary Unit will be opened in UCMed.
