UCMed’s Collaborative Medical Mission 2024: Empowering Healthcare for All

In pursuit of extending quality and accessible healthcare for all, the University of Cebu Medical Center, Inc. (UCMed) took part in a collaborative Medical Mission in Mandaue City.

UCMed partnered with the Mandaue City Government, the Philippine Medical Association of Michigan (PMAM), the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industries (MCCI), and Kaabag Mandaue to conduct a free medical, surgical, and dental mission.

With profound honor, UCMed hosted the major surgical procedures, while minor surgeries and other dental services were held at the Mandaue City Sports Complex from January 29–February 1, 2024.

Following thorough screenings, a total of eight (8) qualified patients underwent free major operations. The mission successfully addressed the healthcare concerns of 5 patients requiring thyroidectomies, 2 with inguinal hernias, and 1 obstetrics case.

Dr. Nina Angela Darcera, UCMed Assistant to the Medical Director, and Dr. Emmanuel Dizon, President of the Philippine Medical Association of Michigan, spearheaded the mission with their expertise, ensuring its success.

Leading the charge was Dr. Sarah Jane Imbong, UCMed Resident Mission Coordinator of the Department of Surgery, alongside the Training Core, and Consultants of each UCMed Department (Anesthesiology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Internal Medicine, and Surgery Department).

Representatives from the PMAM Surgical Committee, Dr. Susan Raymundo, Dr. Renato Raymundo, Dr. Joel Acfiles, Dr. Ramon Rafer, Dr. Robert Robins, Dr. Geraldo Reyes, and other medical staff also provided valuable support to ensure medical interventions were carried out with precision and care.

Dr. Imbong expressed her appreciation for this historic opportunity for UCMed to collaborate with the international, private, and local sectors toward extending healthcare services to the marginalized community.

Mr. Engelbert Abella and Mr. Athemio Arsenal, patients who underwent hernia surgery, testified to their positive experiences and conveyed the feeling of relief after a successful procedure without shelling out an expense.

All the beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the immediate medical attention received during the free Surgical Mission. They highlighted how the dedication of the medical providers at UCMed and its partners significantly impacted their lives.

It only shows that this initiative serves as a beacon of hope, as UCMed, PMAM and its collaborators remain committed to demonstrating compassion in building healthier and happier communities.
