‘Teamwork, empathy, and compassion make nursing truly meaningful’ – Dr. Tan
University of Cebu Medical Center (UCMed) marked Nurses Week 2025 with heartfelt tributes and inspiring messages that underscored the spirit of service at the heart of the nursing profession.
The celebration, themed “Ating mga Nars, Ating Kinabukasan: Pag-alaga sa Nars, Lakas ng Bayan,” opened on Oct. 27 with a thanksgiving mass at the 3rd floor chapel, followed by a grand ceremony at the 6th floor conference room.
In his message, UCMed medical director Dr. Armando V. Tan reminded nurses that, while skill and knowledge are essential, what truly gives meaning to their work is the way they serve — with heart.
“It is teamwork, empathy, and compassion that make nursing truly meaningful,” he said. “These values define not only how we care for our patients but also how we lift one another as colleagues and as a healthcare family.”
Dr. Tan emphasized that UCMed’s success as a hospital rests on the collective strength of its nurses, whose resilience and kindness inspire everyone in the organization.
“Our nurses are not just caregivers. They are the anchors of our hospital, the steady hands and hearts that keep the healing going,” he pointed out.

Ms. Maria Fe Aura Montesclaros, director of Nursing Services, also expressed her appreciation for the dedication of UCMed nurses, emphasizing that their compassion brings life to the hospital’s mission of patient-centered care.
The opening program featured the Nightingale Lamp Lighting Ceremony, symbolizing the enduring light of service carried by every nurse. Ms. Montesclaros and the nursing leadership led the lighting.
Miss NSO Year 2024 Arianne Albaño later led the Florence Nightingale Pledge, renewing the nurses’ commitment to care with love and integrity.

After the ribbon-cutting that opened the Nurses Week exhibit, participants joined a lively Zumba session sponsored by Pocari Sweat, a reminder that self-care is also essential to caring for others.
Throughout the week, nurses took part in activities promoting learning, teamwork, and community service, including an Educational Forum, a Knowledge Hunt, and a Community Outreach at Gasa sa Gugma.

The celebration concluded with the “Delivering Happiness” program and a joyful culmination event.
More than a series of activities, UCMed’s Nurses Week 2025 became a reaffirmation of the hospital’s commitment to its people — the nurses who embody its core values of service, compassion, and excellence.
As Dr. Tan reminded: “When nurses care for one another, they care better for everyone.”
