UCMed: THE FIRST REPRESENTATIVE INSTITUTION AND THE ONLY HOSPITAL IN REGION 7 TO JOIN NATIONWIDE EARTHQUAKE DRILL
As a key step in strengthening earthquake preparedness, the University of Cebu Medical Center, Inc. (UCMed), along with the University of Cebu School of Medicine (UCSM), proudly participated as the first representative institution and the only private hospital in Region 7 for the 4th Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) on November 14, 2024.
Spearheaded by the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD), this nationwide initiative emphasizes proactive preparedness, aiming to strengthen public safety and institutional resilience in the event of seismic disasters.
The drill simulated real-life scenarios, including structural damage, injured individuals, evacuations, and an influx of patients in the Emergency Department. This allowed UCMed and UCSM staff to confront potential challenges in an actual earthquake, improving situational awareness and response times.
Staff along with some hospital visitors/patients performed the DUCK, COVER, and HOLD protocol during the drill.
Various local agencies were also invited to participate in the drill as evaluators alongside the OCD. These included the Bureau of Fire Protection Region 7, Mandaue City (BFP); the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, Mandaue (CDRRMO); the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation (ERUF); the Department of Health (DOH); the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD); the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PHIVOLCS); and the Office of the Building Official, Mandaue (OBO).
UCMed and UCSM’s participation underscores its commitment to emergency preparedness and disaster response, setting a model for healthcare facilities.
