UCMed Observes World Diabetes Day 2024: Fostering Diabetes Awareness in Schools and Workplaces
UCMed celebrated World Diabetes Day on November 12, 2024, with the theme “Diabetes & Well-Being ” and a special focus on the sub-themes “Start Them Young” and “Workplace Wellness.”
Led by UCMed’s Diabetes and Nutrition Center (DNC) in collaboration with the Nursing Services Department and UC College of Nursing, the event highlighted the critical role of education in preventing and managing diabetes across school and workplace settings.
The program held in the 6th Floor Conference Room brought together nursing students from UC Banilad College of Nursing and dietetic interns from Silliman University.
Mr. Joshua David Bendoy, DNC Manager and Chief Nutritionist-Dietitian, along with Mr. Vincent Fernandez, Diabetes Nurse Educator, and Ms. Sarah Vergas, Nutritionist-Dietitian, led the program, which included hands-on workshops on diabetes management.
Participants gained practical experience in random blood sugar (RBS) screenings and capillary blood glucose (CBG) testing under the guidance of Mr. Fernandez, Ms. Vergas, and Ms. Alma Lastimosa from Roche Philippines, who also provided Accu-Chek glucose meters for the workshop. Roche’s support allowed students to practice real-time diabetes care techniques, with Ms. Lastimosa sharing insights on using these devices effectively.
The Philippine College of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism (PCEDM), represented by Dr. April Melody T. Abcede, DNC Unit Head, supplied educational materials and information for the event, reinforcing UCMed’s commitment to evidence-based practices in diabetes care.
In her closing remarks, Dr. Abcede encouraged students and nursing leaders to promote diabetes awareness, emphasizing the importance of early education (“Start Them Young”) and workplace initiatives (“Workplace Wellness”) in the fight against diabetes.
UCMed’s participation in World Diabetes Day 2024 reflected its dedication to diabetes education and prevention, equipping future healthcare professionals with essential skills and knowledge to support diabetes care in diverse settings.
